2. How surprising is this evidence if my belief is false?

If your employee is actually dishonest, how surprising is the minor expense error? Also not very — dishonest people make small mistakes too. But the systematic inflation? Not surprising at all — that's exactly what dishonesty looks like.

Evidence that would be surprising under one hypothesis but unsurprising under another is diagnostic — it should move your belief significantly. Evidence that's equally expected under both hypotheses tells you almost nothing.

This is why one bad day from a normally reliable colleague shouldn't shake your confidence much. Bad days happen to everyone. But a pattern of missed commitments? That's diagnostic. Time to update.
